Functional Vitamin B12 Deficiency Represented by Elevated Urine Methylmalonic Acid Levels in Patients with Migraine

چکیده
Materials and Methods: Fifty women having migraine without aura were matched with healthy controls (n=6) with the same age distribution. Fasting serum vitamin B12, folate, plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) and first morning urine methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels were determined in patient and control groups. Statistical differences in laboratory parameters between patient and control groups were analyzed by SPSS for Windows software.

Cobalamin Deficiency During Pregnancy Expressed as Elevated Urine Methylmalonic Acid Levels Determined by a Photometric Assay
Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate d...
متن کاملApplicability of an enzymatic quantitation of methylmalonic, propionic, and acetic acids in normal and megaloblastic states.
A rapid sensitive spectrophotometric assay for the measurement of methylmalonic and propionic acids in urine is described. The assay is based upon the quantitation of propionic acid using acetyl coenzyme A synthetase isolated from baker's yeast. This enzyme is highly specific for acetate and propionate, and acetate interference is eliminated by conversion to citrate. Methylmalonic acid was assa...
متن کاملThe clinical evaluation of cobalamin deficiency by determination of methylmalonic acid in serum or urine is not invalidated by the presence of heterozygous methylmalonic-acidaemia.
It is well established that accumulation of methylmalonic acid may provide an early clue to the existence of tissue cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency. To verify whether methylmalonic acid accumulates in adult heterozygotes for inherited methylmalonic-acidaemia and thereby gives "false" positive test results for cobalamin deficiency, we measured the concentration of methylmalonic acid in serum ...
متن کاملColorimetric method for estimating methylmalonic acid in urine.
The increased urinary excretion of methylmalonic acid in vitamin B12 deficiency has attracted attention and several studies have suggested that it has clinical value as a test of vitamin B12 deficiency (Cox and White, 1962; Bashir, Hinterberger, and Jones, 1966). Chromatographic methods of estimation have been used but are either time consuming or only semiquantitative over a narrow range of me...
متن کاملAnaemia and Haemoglobinuria Holotranscobalamin – An Early Marker for Laboratory Diagnosis of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency is widespread. Among the population groups at risk are older people, vegetarians, pregnant women and patients with renal or intestinal diseases. The neurological symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are unspecific and can be irreversible. Early detection is therefore important. This article reviews the diagnostic performance of the different laboratory markers for vitamin B...
